Important to know when driving

• Off-road driving and the Balos gravel road (from Kalyviani village) are strictly forbidden with any rental car - insurance is void. Reach Balos by boat from Kissamos instead.
• Drive only on proper asphalt roads; avoid gravel roads and unmaintained mountain tracks.
• All cars are GPS-tracked and damage that happens off the asphalt is never covered.
• Mountain roads are often narrow and winding.
• Goats and sheep can be on the roads, especially in mountain areas.
• Fuel prices in Crete are usually around €2 per litre.
• Most petrol stations accept card payments.
• Always carry water, sunscreen and a hat.

An animal park and botanical garden home to emus, camels, monkeys, parrots, and other exotic species. A wonderful day out for families with children - the walking trails are easy, and there is an explanation by each animal.

One of the largest aquariums in the Mediterranean - over 2000 sea creatures in 60 tanks. You'll see sharks, rays, octopuses, and jellyfish. Perfect for visitors of all ages and a great plan for a rainy day.

Near Chania

Kournas Lake

Crete's only natural freshwater lake, nestled in the shadow of the mountains. You can rent a boat or a catamaran and slowly cruise around the lake. Beachfront cafes for lunch - the water is pleasantly cool in the summer.

💡 In spring, the water level is at its highest, and fish can be seen from the shore.

Southern Rethymno

An impressive gorge with a waterfall that flows year-round. A short hike up to the church and down to the water - the sanctuary built into the rock is part of Crete's Orthodox heritage. On the way to Preveli - combine both in one day.

💡 Wear sturdy shoes - the rocks are slippery.
