Crete excursions picked by a local

Crete is big - there is more to see than fits into one holiday. These are the excursions I actually recommend: lagoons, Minoan history, mountain villages and one day trip to Santorini.

For each trip we tell you honestly who it suits, how long the day is and whether it's worth doing with your own rental car.

Most popular excursions

  • Balos Lagoon - By boat from Kissamos only - a turquoise lagoon and the pirate fortress of Gramvousa. Driving the gravel track in a rental car is strictly forbidden.
  • Elafonisi pink beach - Shallow pinkish sand on Crete's south-west tip - great for families, go early.
  • Knossos Palace - The heart of Minoan civilisation next to Heraklion, paired with the archaeological museum.
  • Spinalonga island - A Venetian fortress and former leper island in the bay of Elounda.
  • Santorini day trip - High-speed ferry from Heraklion - caldera, Oia and sunset in a single day.
  • Jeep safari - Mountain villages, gorges and gravel tracks where a normal rental car won't go.

When to go

May, June and September are the best months: the sea is warm but the beaches aren't packed. In July-August go early - Balos and Elafonisi fill up by 11am. In winter focus on mountain villages, museums and tavernas.

Excursion + rental car

Most guests combine both: a couple of organised trips and the rest of the days at their own pace with a rental car. Renting without a deposit makes that easy - check the fleet and ask for an offer.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best excursions in Crete?
For a first visit: Balos Lagoon, Elafonisi, Knossos and Spinalonga. With more time, add the Samaria gorge or a Santorini day trip.
Can I visit Balos Lagoon by car?
No. The gravel track to Balos is strictly forbidden with a rental car - 4x4 and SUV included. Insurance is void there and all damage is on the driver. Reach Balos by boat from Kissamos.
Are excursions available in Estonian?
We arrange your trip and communicate in Estonian, English or Finnish. On-site guides usually speak English.
Can I do the tours with my own rental car?
Yes - many places are perfect to explore on your own on paved roads. We give you the route, parking tips and the best time. The exception is Balos: boat only, the gravel track is off-limits for rental cars.
