Crete rewards travellers who stop moving.
Almost everything above is far easier with your own car. Public buses connect the north coast well, but the mountain roads, hidden coves and villages are where Crete really opens up.
Seven days lets you see one half of the island properly. Ten to fourteen days covers both west and east without rushing.
For beaches, gorges and villages, yes. Buses cover the main towns only.
May, June, September and early October: warm sea, fewer crowds, comfortable hiking temperatures.
