White lines = free. Blue lines = paid, buy a ticket from the kiosk or machine. Yellow lines = no parking, ever (loading or residents).

Old towns are pedestrianised - park outside and walk five minutes.

Balos and Elafonissi charge a small fee in high season. Popular beaches fill up before 11:00 - arrive early or after 16:00.

Do I need coins?

Useful, but most kiosks and shops sell parking tickets and many machines take cards.

Are fines common?

Yellow lines and blocked entrances are ticketed and towed. Blue lines are checked less often but still enforced.

Usually yes outside city centres; in Chania and Heraklion expect a nightly fee.
