Rethymno Old Town & Fortezza - Crete excursion

Rethymno Old Town & Fortezza

Venetian lanes, an Ottoman minaret and a fortress over the sea

Half day, 6 hours - or a 10-hour day combined with Chania and Lake Kournas RethymnoFrom90 / per person

Rethymno has the best-preserved old town in Crete: four centuries of Venetian architecture with Ottoman minarets rising between the balconies, all of it small enough to wander without a map.

Above it stands the Fortezza, one of the largest Venetian fortresses ever built, with the sea on three sides.

Frequently asked questions

Is there much walking?

About two hours in total, flat except the fortress ramp.

Best place for lunch?

The lighthouse harbour is beautiful but pricey; the lanes one street back are better value. Your guide will point you.

Can we combine it with a beach?

Yes - ask and we will add a swim stop at Episkopi or Georgioupoli on the way back.

Is it good in shoulder season?

It is at its best in May and October when the lanes are quiet.
