Knossos is the oldest city in Europe and the birthplace of the labyrinth myth. Four thousand years ago it held five storeys, running water, and frescoes of dolphins and bull-leapers.
With a licensed guide it goes from a field of ruins to a living city in about ninety minutes - and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum next door holds the originals.
Almost every worthwhile version of this trip includes the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, because the originals of the frescoes, the Phaistos Disc and the snake goddesses all live there rather than at the site.

Driving yourself? Parking opposite the site costs a few euros and the ticket office opens at 08:00.

Is a guide really necessary?
At Knossos, yes. The signage is minimal and the reconstruction is confusing without someone to explain what is original.
Can we stay in Heraklion afterwards?
Yes - tell the driver and we will drop you in the centre instead.
How hot does it get?
In July and August the site is very exposed. That is why we start in the morning.
Is it interesting for children?
The Minotaur story carries it. Ask the guide to tell it at the start and you will have their attention.
