Elafonissi Beach - Crete excursion

Elafonissi Beach

Pink sand, a shallow lagoon and the far south-west corner of Crete

Full day, 10-11 hours South-west ChaniaFrom75 / per person

Elafonissi is a sandbar island joined to the mainland by water so shallow you walk across it. Crushed coral tints the sand pink in patches, the lagoon warms up like a bath, and behind the beach a protected dune system holds rare lilies.

It is also a proper journey - the road curls through mountain villages and chestnut forest, and the trip is as memorable as the destination.

The drive west is part of the day: a coffee stop in the chestnut village of Elos, the Topolia gorge tunnel, and - if you like - a honey, olive-oil and wine tasting on the way home.

Frequently asked questions

In patches, yes - strongest at the far end of the sandbar and after storms. Do not take any home; it is protected.

Is it good for small children?

It is one of the best family beaches in Greece. The lagoon is knee-deep and warm for tens of metres.

Are there facilities?

Yes - canteens, toilets, sunbeds and umbrellas for hire. It gets busy from 11:00 to 16:00 in high season.

Can I drive there myself?

Yes, the road is fully asphalted and any car manages it. Allow 1h30 from Chania and arrive before 10:30 for parking.
