Spinalonga & Agios Nikolaos - Crete excursion

Spinalonga & Agios Nikolaos

A Venetian fortress island, and the prettiest lake town in Crete

Full day, 8-9 hours (4.5 h if you join from Agios Nikolaos) Lasithi, eastern CreteFrom50 / per person

Spinalonga is the most affecting place in eastern Crete. A Venetian sea fortress that later became Europe's last leper colony until 1957, it is now a silent street of roofless houses with the bluest water in Greece lapping the walls.

The boat leaves from Plaka or Elounda, and the afternoon finishes in Agios Nikolaos, the little harbour town built around a bottomless lake.

Most visitors combine the island with Elounda and Agios Nikolaos: the boat crossing from Plaka or Elounda takes about ten minutes, the guided walk inside the fortress around an hour, and the rest of the day belongs to the lake town.

Frequently asked questions

How long do we spend on the island?

Around 90 minutes, which is enough to walk the full circuit without rushing.

Is it accessible with a wheelchair or pram?

Partly. The main street is paved but there are slopes and steps. Tell us in advance and we will arrange the easier landing point.

Is the island really the setting of The Island by Victoria Hislop?

Yes - most guests arrive having read it, and the guide will point out the places in the book.

Can I go independently with a rental car?

Absolutely. Drive to Plaka, park, and take the small boat. We are happy to hand you a map instead of a tour.
